I want to create and sell an online course - where do I start?

Kirsty Dove • October 27, 2021

You start at the beginning...

More easily said than done!

You may have spent time creating content for an online course.  It might contain one or many ideas, images, videos, quizzes, downloads... and it's time to take it out there and sell it.  The best way to do this is on a website that can handle courses and/or subscriptions.  It is really important that you know the difference between these options, as this will dictate what steps and options would work best for you.

These platforms are typically called an LMS - Learning Management Systems.  A way to get learning delivered to your customers, via an online tool.

There are a number of questions that you need to ask yourself first:

List of Services

If I have WordPress

So you can plug something in.  This can be a little more complicted to setup, but it gives you the most flexibility with the design.  The most popular are:

MemberPress

BEST ALL-IN ONE

One of the most popular options for WordPress is MemberPress.  It offers a fully featured complete membership and subscription solution, but it can be complicated to setup so make sure it is what you need.

KEY BENEFITS:
  • Content drip and expiry
  • Subscription management built in
  • Comprehensive content restriction options
  • Integrates with multiple marketing plugins

It can be complicated to setup and learn how to use it. Although simple to manage once that is all done.

  • Plus – $249
  • Pro – $349

LearnDash is one of the most popular for WordPress, especially if you are selling courses.  It is a great options if you are just doing courses (although there is a new membership module now), and is drag and drop - so easier than many others to setup.

Used by many companies and even Universities.

  • Drag & drop, so easy to build your courses
  • Good for content drip feed
  • Cheap for what you get

CONS:

There is no setup wizard, so you will need to know your way around WordPress,  there will be a bit of a learning curve for beginners.

The core plugin is free, but you can't do much with it.  Then the prices hike very fast as you add the functionality you will most likely need.

  • One Individual add on from $120 USD per year
  • Each extra piece of functionality will cost extra - e.g. Stripe add-on is $120 USD
  • Bundles start at $360 USD per year

LearnPress

If you have a theme that can handle this - it is an option.  But it doesn't have great support.  Think carefully about going down this road...

KEY BENEFITS:

  • It has a usable free option
  • Integrates well with WooCommerce
  • Management tracking (course content and students)

CONS:
  • Poor support, so if it breaks, you could be in trouble.
  • You do need to use a compatible theme, and it will not work on just any Wordpress theme.
  • You have to pay extra to drip feed the content.

PRICE

The core plugin is free, but you can't do much with it.  Still, reasonable costs to get you up and running.

  • Free for the basic option
  • Theme Bundle - $49 - $69 USD
  • Pro Bundle $249 - $499 for 3 websites

Why Should You Care? Let's talk about something that might make you squirm a little - your website's health. You know, that digital storefront you built a while ago and haven't really checked up on since? Yeah, that one. Don't worry, we're not here to judge - we're here to help! Let's cut to the chase: Your website is either working hard for your business or it's just taking up digital space. And here's the kicker - most business owners don't know which camp they're in until things start going wrong. Yikes! What We Actually Look At (Because Details Matter) The Technical Deep Dive Think of this as your website's engine room. We're talking about those critical security checks that keep the bad guys out - because trust us, outdated plugins are like leaving your digital front door wide open. We'll check how fast your pages load because in today's world, if your site takes more than a few seconds to load, your visitors are already gone. And let's not forget about mobile responsiveness - because let's face it, when was the last time you weren't on your phone? The Visual Experience This is where we get into the nitty-gritty of how your site looks and feels. We're checking if your important stuff stands out (that's what we call visual hierarchy), making sure your brand consistency is on point across every page (because brand confusion is not a good look), and ensuring visitors can actually find what they're looking for without playing digital hide and seek. The Content That Converts Words matter, folks! We'll dive deep into how your content is structured, whether it's telling your story effectively, and if it's optimized for those all-important search engines. Are your calls-to-action actually calling anyone to action? Is your message crystal clear or clear as mud? These are the questions that keep us up at night (yes, we're that passionate about it). The Process (How We Make the Magic Happen) Step 1: Detective Mode We put on our digital detective hats and start gathering evidence. We're looking at: Where your traffic comes from and where it goes How users behave on your site (the good, the bad, and the ugly) Your technical setup from top to bottom How effectively your content connects with your audience Step 2: The Truth Bomb Report This is where we lay it all out - no sugar coating, just straight facts in plain English (unless you're into tech jargon, we can do that too). We'll show you: What needs fixing yesterday Where you could be doing better Quick wins vs. long-term projects Exactly what to do next Step 3: Your Game Plan Because knowing is only half the battle, we create a detailed action plan that includes: A prioritised list of improvements Timeline recommendations Resource requirements Expected outcomes and ROI When You Need an Audit (Spoiler: Probably Now) You definitely need one if: Your website's older than your last haircut Your competitors are leaving you in their digital dust You're getting traffic but no leads You can't remember the last time you updated your plugins You're planning a website refresh The Investment (Because Your Business Deserves It) Think of a website audit as preventive medicine for your digital presence. It's way cheaper than dealing with a security breach, watching your competitors dominate search results, or having to start from scratch because something broke. Plus, the ROI on a well-functioning website? Priceless. The Caper Promise We're not about handing over a technical report and disappearing into the digital sunset. When you work with us, you get: Clear explanations in human terms Actionable solutions you can implement Support through the improvement process A website that works as hard as you do Ready to Level Up Your Digital Game? Let's be honest - your website might be crying for help right now. But hey, that's what we're here for! At The Caper, we're all about making your digital presence work for you, not against you. Want to know if your website is a digital rockstar or needs some serious coaching? Let's chat about getting your website audit started. Because in the digital world, what you don't know CAN hurt you! Remember, your website should be your hardest-working employee - always on, always selling, always representing your brand perfectly. If it's not doing all that, we need to talk! (See what we did there? A little sass, a lot of truth, and actionable insights - that's The Caper way!)
